Pancreas or isolated islet might become means “therapeutic protocol” or “therapeutic method” of cure diabetes and keep blood glucose normal for long time. Backgrand Currently, pancreas transplantation can restore insulin independence in up to 90% of patients “diabetic recipients” 1 year after surgery “Tx”, but the procedure is technically demanding and is associated with serious complications and high mortality. Isolated islet transplantation is much simpler , safer and less costly. Backgrand Before Edmonton’s initial report of successful islet transplantation ,registry data indicate that insulin independence was infrequently achieved, only 8.2 percent have done so for periods of more than one year. Backgrand In July 2000, investigators from Edmonton reported that glucocorticoid-free immunosuppression, islets transplanted from two to four donors, and improved islet isolation methods restored long-term insulin independence in seven consecutive patients . It offers the prospect of good glycemic control without major surgical risks. We now report Benefits and Risks of islet transplantation in our five diabetic patients using Edmonton protocol. Patients Patients with type 1 diabetes for at least 3 years with hypoglycemia frequently had no measurable basal- or Oral glucose tolerance C-peptide secretion(0.16nmol/l) before transplantation. Patients with significant associated medical conditions were excluded. written informed consent was obtained from all patients.
