In 1642, a Civil War broke out between the king and Parliament. Ⅱ. Literary Characteristics and Major Writers and Works In early 17th century, poetry still dominated literature. There were two schools of poets: the Cavalier Poets (骑士派诗人) and the Metaphysical Poets (玄学派诗人). Ben Jonson and the Cavalier Poets Ben Jonson 本·琼生 (1572-1637)---“莎士比亚的接班人” First, he was a famous play writer. As an advocate
