Some researchers consider that EAA requirements are best expressed as a percentage of diet which implies that diet composition does not influence the utilization of the first limiting dietary EAA for protein deposition. Other researchers suggest that EAA requirements should be expressed in relation to the diet energy content because diet energy content determines feed intake of the fish, thus, high-energy diets will require a higher EAA concentration to compensate for a lower feed intake. Finally for another school of thought, amino acid balance should also be considered since at higher levels of protein (or higher protein energy ratios) more amino acids are preferentially catabolized to supply energy, so in their point of view EAA requirements are best expressed in relation to the dietary protein content. These different modes of expression affect how the information on EAA requirements is used when formulating practical cost-effective feeds, and can result in diametrically opposite interpretations. Individual EAA levels deemed adequate in the diet may be very different depending on the mode of expression adopted, the composition of the diet formulated, and the amino acids composition of the ingredients used. Results after the 12 weeks revealed that there was a significant response in weight gain to increasing lysine and DE levels but no effect of DE in lysine requirement since similar estimates were achieved with different DE levels (2.28 vs 2.33). This is more evident when we look into the results of N retention, where we can clear see no effect of DE. The fish fed the high DE, had a lower feed intake. So while the differences in fish weight were mainly due to increased lipid deposition, similar N retention with lower intake was
