Local Area Network Design for School Dormitories i LOCAL AREA NETWORK DESIGN FOR SCHOOL DORMITORIES Yun Wang Department of Communication Engineering, Information Engineering College, 102617 ABSTRACT Multimedia communication on distance is strongly demanded along with the development of computer, communication and network. The design and implement of IEEE802.3 LAN is discussed in my paper in order to make up and change the way which students in dormitory browse internet through phone line. The network is based on the conception and items of computer distribution, communication technology and communication protocol. According to the IEEE802.3 protocol, the LAN can implement connection between rooms, and to internet, and to the school network. On the one hand, students can communicate with each other; On the other hand, the dormitory can be connected with the library, the computer center to make use of the teaching resource of the school. The communication network includes three layers: firstly, students can connected with each other through eight-port hubs between rooms; secondly, hubs can be connected with each other in a building by switches, which have the router function for each computer; thirdly, the whole dormitory can be connected with the library, other teaching buildings and gym through optical fiber lines. In the end, the paper still explains how to select and configure software. The price in the practical project used is still listed for reference.
