787 Significantly Quieter For The Community With every new airplane, Boeing continues to find better ways to reduce the impact on the environment and the 787 is no exception. Our new airframes and engines will give the Dreamliner the smallest sound footprint with the quietest takeoffs and landings in its class. Inside the contour lines show where the noise is 85 decibels (dBA) or above. 85 dBA is comparable to the sound of a gas powered lawnmower while operating it. To put this into context, the level of a normal conversation is 65 dBA. In addition to being significantly quieter than other airplanes, the green contour for the 787 airplane is inside the fence on every major airport that the airplane will use—a huge improvement on the noise signature of an airplane. This is good news for the people in airport neighborhoods around the world. Also, while in flight, the 787 will provide a quieter ride for its relaxing passengers. The 787 Dreamliner is truly providing a new world of possibilities for the environment and the passenger. (NOTE: The noise contours/footprints presented within are generated using the FAA Integrated Noise Model (INM) version 6.1, an industry standard airport noise modeling tool. 787 data is preliminary. Airbus contours are generated in consistent manner to Boeing contours, and are derived from Airbus supplied noise, performance, and weight data that is internal to the INM. Development Schedule On Track We announced the 787 concept in late 2002. Since then, we have been working together with more than 50 customers to develop the capabilities and features they would like to see in this new airplane. The Boeing Board of Directors voted in December, 2003, to grant authority to offer the 787 Dreamliner. Last year, we made the first 787 sales and officially launched the airplane program.
