The efficacy of using Somatostatin in the treatment of Jinan University Master thesis Gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours: A meta-analysis Abstract Objective: To compare the efficacy differences between using somatostain (SST) and without usage of SST in the treatment gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours (GI NETs). Method: Computerised bibliographic searches of MEDLINE, Science Direct On Site (SDOS), Springer database, Cochrane Library, Chinese Biomedicine Database (CBM), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Chinese Evidence-Based Medicine/ Cochrane Center Database (CEBM/CCD) from January 1979 to March 2011. In addition, a manual search was performed for references cited in published original and reviewed articles. The studies meeting the inclusion criteria were selected, and their methodological quality was assessed. A total of 12 studies comparing the efficacy of using somatostatin and without somatosatin therapy in the treatment of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours were included. Data of these studies were extracted via the data extraction form by Microsoft Access. Heterogeneity of the included articles was tested, which was used to select appropriate effect model to calculate risk ratio (RR) and the according 95%confidence intervals (CI) . Moreover, sensitivity analysis and publication bias were performed. Begg‘s test, Egger ‘s test and ―Trim and fill‖ method were used to test for the publication bias.
