Some impo tant p ope ties of unsatu ated soil associated with slope stability a e discussed with emphasis on the fundamental p oblem of unsatu ated soils, i. e. , ai wate phases and thei movement .Foustage aiwate phase division is put fo wa d fo an unsatu ated soil in which the mo istu e condition va ies f om d y to sat u ated. Detailed expe imental studies demonst ated that an unsatu ated soil would exhibit diffe ent behavio at diffe ent states of ai wate phase. Then, fo unsatu ated soil the suction in an unsatu ated soil and its elationship to wate content ( i. e. , soilwate cha acte istic cu ve( SWCC) ) a e discussed. A simple equation fo desc ibing the shea st ength of unsatu ated soils was p oposed on the basis of the foustate division of ai wate phase. The ecent advance in the constitutive elationships of an unsatu ated soil is also int oduced b iefly.
