A model of endogenous growth first highlights the transfer of foreign technology as a key determinant of economic growth, and suggests that economic growth may conversely influence the inflows of foreign capital. Simultaneous-equation model estimation based on a sample of 24 Chinese provinces, from 1985 to 1996, confirms the fundamental role played by foreign investment in provincial economic growth in China, and stresses the importance of potential growth in foreign investment decisions. Introduction The dramatic economic growth of the People’s Republic of China over the last twenty years has generated an increasing number of empirical studies aimed at explaining this performance.When compared with other developing countries as well as with transition economies of eastern Europe, China offers a striking example of success; and it is usually recognized that its policy of opening up to the outside world, combined with a range of domestic economic reforms, has enhanced economic growth.
