Abstract : For critical buildings, due to the special shape demands, the structural layouts o ten become irregular. On the
other hand , because o the importance o their unction , the seismic design criterion o these buildings is higher than normal
ones . The designer o structure usually encounters di iculty and challenge in the seismic design . Tw o approaches to improve
the seismic per ormance o buildings w ere presented : One is to reallocate the bending sti ness o the local structural
members in order to make the distribution o structural sti ness uni orm inherently though the appearance is irregular. The
other is to add some oil dampers to buildings, w hich may provide additional damping or structures . The analysis results
indicated that the structural seismic per ormance could be obviously enhanced due to adoption o above approaches, and the
sections o structural members ( column , beam) could be reduced, and then to get better cost per ormance.
