One important issue, therefore, is how to make the patterns found by computer programs understandable by human-beings (especially non-experts in data mining). Some existing data mining algorithms are intrinsically comprehensible (i.e. they work with human-understandable representations of pattern), while others are not. This paper strives to summarize some of the recent efforts to improve the comprehensibility of data mining methods, including both the development of intrinsically comprehensible algorithms, and various ways of coordinating and integrating intrinsically and non-intrinsically comprehensible algorithms.
