The famous pilot Jackie Cochran was born in the south as Bessie Lee Pittman. Her family was so poor that Cochran often had to do without basic necessities. In her autobiography, she wrote that she did not own a pair of shoes until she was eight years old and that she wore dresses made of flour sacks. Fortunately, Cochran was taken under the wing of a beauty-shop owner when she was only a child and quickly mastered her craft. By the time she was 13, Cochran was cutting hair full-time Cocchran was determined to make a better life for herself and to help otehrs who had been forced to live in poverty. Cochran recalled seeing three children living in horrible conditions. “There I was with neither the strength nor the money to do the smallest fraction of what needed to be done to make those lives better,” she said. By giving people new haircuts, she felt that she could at least make people happy for a while but she wanted to do much more.
When she was only 15, Cochran moved to New York City, where there were better-paying jobs. She worked as a hairstylist and her services were soon in demand. At this time, she changed her name to Jackie Cochran, a name she felt better suited her new occupation.
In time, Cochran was hired at a salon in the Saks Fifth Avenue department sotre. This job paid r very well and Cochran became immensely popular among her customers. Some of them even paid her to travel with them! It was during one of these trips tha she met Floyd Bostwick Odlum, a man who would later become her husband. Cochran told Odlum that she dreamed of strating her own cosmetics company, and her supported her. While she did not have a formal education, Cochran was a quick learner and had a keen business sense. Her husband encouraged her to learn to fly a plane. He thought that this was the best way for her to travel from coast to coast selling her cosmetics.
