The men interviewed for this article, however, 10 that their gender and status as a minority are negative factors, and say that to the contrary, it’s men in nursing, at least in some areas, 11 are getting the breaks.
Working in one of the specialist areas which 12 male nurses—accident and emergency, Chris Hahne said he has never experienced any discrimination, positive 13 negative, as a result of his decision to practice nursing. Despite feeling “downtrodden” as a student nurse, 14 he maintained was unrelated to gender. Mr. Hahne disagreed there was any discrimination or 15 stereotyping. “Maybe 10 years ago, there may have been some comments questioning my sexuality, but it is definitely 16 accepted these days,” Mr. Hahne said. Men often elect to work in areas of high acuity and Mr. Hahne said this was 17 males tended to prefer the “blood, guts (内脏) and action” type of 18 found in critical areas. “Th
