Extending fluid life Many operators include, as part of their system maintenance program, the periodic dtain and flushing of the system. this practiceis costly environmentaly unsound, and, very likely, unproductice if not actually harmfulto the system. a mach more effective approach is to extend the life so the fluid through an aggressive proactive maintenance program that emphasizes fluid maintence and monitoring In a well designed and well maintained fluid power system,fluid life should extend to many thousand of hours. basically, this implises that the contaminants listed and discussed in chapters 2and 3 must be excluded or removed from the system.. There are many factors that affect fluid life, and most of them are interrelated. for example, fluid oxidation will occur at room temperature and atmospheric pressure; however, the oxidation rate is so slow that no significant changes dramatically as the fluid temperature is increased-especially when it exceeds 60.above that temperture, the oxidation tare essentially doubles for every 10 increase in temperature. doubling the oxidation rate cuts the useful life of the oil in half. Fluid oxidation is not a function of temperature alone; the availability of oxygen is also significant. even at room temperature ,the oxidation rate inceases dramatically as the air content of the oil inceases. the combination of an elevated temperature and high aeration levels accelerates the process. figure 13.1shows the effects of increasing Entrained air content while operating the systems at 3625 psi and 70 it compares. The change in the neutralization number of fluid –a reliable indicator of the oxidation rate –at various aeration levels and operating times with the same type oil operating at the same temperature, but with no entrained air. as the entrained air exceeds about 3,the meutralization number approximately doubles. this increase has been found to reath a factor of 10 when the entrained air level reachea 13. The oxidation
