Part Ⅰ:ACaseStudy ZHUJiangshan*1,2 FanyouKONG3, LEIHengchi1 1InstituteofAtmosphericPhysics,ChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100029 2GraduateUniversityofChineseAcademyofSciences,Beijing100049 3CenterforAnalysisandPredictionofStorms,UniversityofOklahoma,USA 2010-08-10 2011-03-19 Asingle-model,short-range,ensembleforecastingsystem(InstituteofAtmosphericPhysics,Regional EnsembleForecastSystem,IAPREFS)with15-kmgridspacing,configuredwithmultipleinitialconditions, multiplelateralboundaryconditions,andmultiplephysicsparameterizationswith11ensemblemembers, wasdevelopedusingtheWeatherandResearchForecastingModelAdvancedResearchmodelingsystemfor predictionofstratiformprecipitationeventsinnorthernChina.Thisisthefirstpartofabroaderresearch projecttodevelopanovelcloud-seedingoperationalsysteminaprobabilisticframework. Theensemble perturbationswereextractedfromselectedmembersoftheNationalCenterforEnvironmentalPrediction GlobalEnsembleForecastingSystem(NCEPGEFS)forecasts,andaninflationfactoroftwowasappliedto compensateforthelackofspreadintheGEFSforecastsovertheresearchregion.Experimentsonanactual stratiformprecipitationcasethatoccurredon5-7June2009innorthernChinawereconductedtovalidate theensemblesystem.TheIAPREFSsystemhadreasonablygoodperformanceinpredictingtheobserved stratiformprecipitationsystem.Theperturbationinflationenlargedtheensemblespreadandalleviated theunderdispersioncausedbyparentforecasts.Centeringtheextractedperturbationsonhigher-resolution NCEPGlobalForecastSystemforecastsresultedinlessensemblemeanroot-mean-squareerrorandbetter accuracyinprobabilisticquantitativeprecipitationforecasts(PQPF).However,theperturbationinflation andrecenteringhadlesseffectonnear-surface-levelvariables
