In the 1990s, that mode of learning was introduced into Chinese universities, immediately followed by a craze for exploring the possibility of setting up self access centers and ways of maintaining it, developing systematized learning strategies, and cultivating and maintaining learners’ initiative and autonomy. However, the teacher’s roles in autonomous learning have not been adequately discussed although some scholars did notice this issue. The consequence is that some people begin to doubt about the function of teachers, others are at a loss. The question “are teachers still needed in autonomous learning?” has become an imposing question for all educators.
