Conventional techniques for retrieving textual and numerical data based on simple comparisons are no longer adequate for images, since the digitized representation of an image does not conve its semantic content. This paper presents the current state of the art in image retrieval. We first exam the indexing techniques for visual content and information content for image retrieval. Next, we review recent studies of image retrieval from the point of view of image indexes. The current challenges and feature trends for image retrieval are also given.
