On the Development of an Undergraduate-Level Tourism Vocational Education under China’s Mass Higher Education By Zhang Wenxiang, Li Zhaorong Beihai College of Beihang University Zip Code: 536000 Abstract In making the Chinese higher education more accessible to the general population, there has existed an increasing mismatch between the rapidly developing tourism education on the one hand and the ever-growing demand by the hospitality industry for well-trained personnel on the other hand, particularly demand for those who are trained by tourism vocational programs within four-year undergraduate educational system. This thesis attempts to analyze and discuss the prospects of development in tourism vocational training in Chinese higher education, with a view to improving and perfecting the educational system of mass Chinese higher education, transforming traditional educational values, and understating the impact which building up tourism as a pillar industry has on tourism vocational training in Chinese higher education. The authors believe that the essential elements of “market-oriented tourism major undergraduate education” involve vocational training at undergraduate level, and as such should embrace system adjustment favoring vocational training aimed at partially elevating the educational level of some of the vocational schools in China, so as to eliminate from both ends the dilemma originated from the mismatch between supply and demand.
