A STUDY OF THE GRASS IS SINGING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ECOFEMINISM A Thesis Submitted to the School of Foreign Languages Shenyang Normal University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts By Fu Ling Under the Supervision of Professor Guo Zhongzhuang May 2012 ABSTRACT Doris Lessing, Nobel Prize winner in literature, is a distinguished female writer in English literary fields. As a female writer, she always remembers to speak for the victims of patriarchal ideology, racism, colonialism, and most of whom are poor people, people of color, females, children, and non-human nature. She involved her whole life in struggling for the equal rights of all, thus, most of her works focus on issues like the suffering of the black people, the poor miserable females and the deteriorated ecological environment. The Grass Is Singing , as Lessing‘s first novel, claimed great attention shortly after its publication. In the novel, Lessing presented her concern about the African land and the miserable people there, either black or white. The disharmonious relationships between man and nature, males and females, blacks and whites take great part of the story and through which Lessing showed her ecofeminist thinking. This thesis is a tentative study of the ecofeminist awareness presented in the novel. Lessing presents the point through attacking males‘ hegemony over females, powerless blacks, and nonhuman nature. There are four parts all together. Apart from introduction and conclusion, two parts are developed mainly focusing on analyzing the novel from an ecofeminist perspective. The second part is a detailed analysis about the disharmonious relationships contained in the novel and the third part is about how to realize harmony for people in the novel. This dissertation is only an attempt to add some ecofeminist understanding of i the novel which may refresh the studying of the novel and draw more people ‘s environmental awareness. From the tragi
