T he digital representation and arithmetic operation based on the balanced ternary w ere introduced to ternary optical computer, for the purpose of providing mathematics theoretical systems for research and design of various arithmetic operation devices of ternary optical comput- er. The expression of positive number and negative are uniform and symmetry in balanced ternary system, it eliminates the sign bit and simplifies the operation of sign numbers. The implementation of addition and subtraction use the same device and the various high eff iciency and symmetry de- vices can be designed, this simplifies the hardw are structure and instruction system of ternary optical computer.
