Un iv. , Guangzhou 510 42, Ch ina) Abstract: Both advantages and d isadvantages of CCD camera and scanner used as mi age acqu isition e quipment for leaf areameasurement using mi age processing methodsw ere discussed in th is paper. For the main lmi itation of currently used leaf aream easuringmethods, w h ich w as that only one p iece of leaf cou ld be measured separately, a novel algorithm based on MATLAB w as figured out to measure each leaf area synchronously in a mu ltileaf scanned mi age. Results of expermi entsw ere as follow s: the accuracy of leaf identificationw hen no superposition bewt een leavesw as 100% , the relative error of calculated leaf area 2 between using thismethod and weighingmethodw as 2. 43% , the determ ination coefficientR w as 0. 999 . Resu lts indicated that th ismethod can be used in the object identification and leaf area calcu lation in a multileaf scanned mi age.
