Chapter one  Puzzles in SLA Section A: What the definition of the SLA from our book ? SLA is a fairly recent acronym and stand for the term “second and language acquisition”. It refer to the conscious or unconscious processes by which people learn (or acquire) a second language ,but it also refers to the study of these processes ,which is a very important part of applied linguistic. The other definition from website: Second language acquisition, or SLA, is the processes by which people learn languages in addition to their native tongues. Just as second language is the standard term for any language whose acquisition starts after early childhood, including what is chronologically the third or subsequent language, SLA is the acquisition of any second language. The language to be learned is often referred to as the target language or L2 Section: B how SLA take place? SLA takes place in two kinds of settings. One is natural settings , another is classroom settings. Children acquire their mother tongue from the surroundings including the family. Family play an very important role in teaching child basic grammar rules and conversation by the age of five or six. There are many people learn L2 this way. SLA may also take place in classroom settings. Every person are required to attend the school to learn culture and science, especially they must learn themselves language. In class, they always have to pay conscious attention to grammars and vocabulary items, which should make an effort to remember. This is called instructed or in tutored SLA. The problems in the classroom settings There is a problem that people may reach a high lever of understanding by learning in class, but they don’t have much opportunities to practice it in real-life communication. For a long time past by , the knowledge could be forgotten and their L2 will get rusty and hazy understandings.
