Victoria Rau Time: February 22- June 21, 2013, 9:10-12:00 Room: 413 Office hours: 2:00-4:00, Mondays and Fridays or by appointment Office phone extension: 31503 E-mail: Lngrau@.tw Institute of Linguistics Goals: The cultivation of professional researchers in the field of linguistics The cultivation of professionals with the ability to innovate, think critically, and participate in scholarly argumentation The cultivation of professionals with the capability to integrate and apply linguistics and its related fields The cultivation of professionals with global views, an understanding of humanities, and the scientific spirit Course Description: This course provides hands-on training in the nuts and bolts of quantitative research methods in linguistics, using a generic statistical software package. Topics include planning research project, describing data, comparing groups (t-test and ANOVA), and describing relationships (implicational scaling, Chi-square, correlation and regression). This course is conducted in a workshop style, beginning with the instructor’s demonstration of tips in quantitative research with homework reinforcement, followed by the class members’ sharing of individual research projects to be modified with the help of the “community of practice”, and ends with a product close to publishable quality. A high level of interaction to meet individual research needs is expected, given the small class size. Each member will proceed from presenting an exemplar article directly related to his/her research, to designing a research plan with literature review as a background, to collecting/transcribing/coding data, to testing the hypotheses by running the statistical analysis and interpreting the results, to presenting the results in a form suitable for linguistic conferences.
