Topics include planning research project, describing data, comparing groups (t-test and ANOVA), and describing relationships (implicational scaling, Chi-square, correlation and regression). This course is conducted in a workshop style, beginning with the instructor’s demonstration of tips in quantitative research with homework reinforcement, followed by the class members’ sharing of individual research projects to be modified with the help of the “community of practice”, and ends with a product close to publishable quality. A high level of interaction to meet individual research needs is expected, given the small class size. Each member will proceed from presenting an exemplar article directly related to his/her research, to designing a research plan with literature review as a background, to collecting/transcribing/coding data, to testing the hypotheses by running the statistical analysis and interpreting the results, to presenting the results in a form suitable for linguistic conferences.
