I was born a shy and retiring girl. I am always seeking chances to improve my inter-personal skills. Two months ago, there came an opportunity to enter the United World College (UWC), a world-renowned group of international high schools aiming at promoting the understanding between different countries. Students who’d like to enter this school need to pass two interviews, one with our school English teachers and another with teachers from UWC. After two days of consideration, I decided to apply for the school mostly because of the chance of an interview. Before the interview day, I watched Christopher Gardner’s interview with his boss in the film “The Pursuit of Happiness” again and again, imagining how I should behave the next day. Then the day finally came. There were totally 29 students applying for the school and we were divided into 3 groups. I was designated to Group C, the last group, with the other 8 students. During the interview, we were asked to have a discussion on three random topics, each topic for 10 minutes’ time after 3 minutes’ preparation. I talked about my answer within my heart over and over but I was just too afraid to speak them out. Listening to other group members voicing their opinion fluently and confidently, I knew I shouldn’t wait any more and I should talk as the next speaker. “All right. I think we can view this question on another aspect.” Such words miraculously came out of my mouth and I knew I was being challenging myself. The classroom was suddenly quiet, leaving me, alone, to talk. I felt a little bit blank and disordered in my mind. I tried to organize those fragments of ideas but it seemed really hard. With shyness again surpassing my confidence, I hawed, blushed and tittered, ending my speech in a hurry. I too
