ABSTRACT The present study was intended to compare waterfronts in China and South Korea. Waterfront provides psychological feelings of security as well as enrichment to residents. It enhances city’s regional characteristics of amenity and beauty thus making it implemental in the improvement of city’s attractiveness. Fourthly, plot planning of waterfronts, layout of functionalities, design theories, and detailed design of waterfronts were compared between these four cities. A waterfront is located on the top of an embankment in Harbin, whereas a waterfront park is located on a high-water plain in Seoul. The spatial plot planning of Dalian beach and Busan beach parks were found similar. However, the Dalian displays a separated city-type open square, whereas the Busan beach has a smaller square as a part of a waterfront park. It appeared that Harbin displayed the most diversity in waterfront functions, evaluating from a macroscopic view. However, Seoul showed the most diversity in functions, if focused on inside the waterfront park. Harbin seemed to have had the first awareness of waterfronts, and Dalian was least aware of it. There was a trend to create a miniature park inside the beaches of Dalian and Busan. In general, the current trend of waterfront design includes more openness of waterfronts, development into public parks, and focus on more detailed designs. Therefore, the present study produced some useful information in designing waterfronts, and raised several suggestions for improvement of waterfronts in the four cities. It is evident that the waterfront functionality needs to be diversified. Designers of waterfronts must consider the factors for satisfactory utilization by citizens. --- ---- It is better to discontinue the use of roads adjacent to waterfronts in Busan, and build a miniature park and an open square at the waterfront.
