Optimization in Solving the Advection of NavierStokes Equation for Smoke Simulation with MacCormack Method Tang Yong, Li Xiaoyan, Lu M engya, and Gao Yinghui ( Col l ege of Inf or mation S cience and E ngi neer ing , Yanshan Univ ers i ty , Qinhu angd ao 066004) Abstract: The smoke simulation plays an important role in the virtual simulation of a largescale complicated environment such as a battlefield, w here realtime simulation is hardly achieved due to the complication and intensive computation in solving the NavierStokes equation. T he M acCormack method is proposed to solving the advection item of NavierStokes. By the method, first, the forw ard advection operator is applied to get the forw ard smoke velocity, and then, the backw ard advection operator is applied to get the backw ard smoke velocity. Finally, the calculated forw ard advection data is corrected according to the estimated error. By the new method, the processing steps in the method of back and forth error compensation and correction during solving the advection item can be substantially reduced. Experimental results show that the optimization can be applied to obtain better visual effects, and achieve realtime simulation through reduction of the computing time in the simulation.
