AbstractThe paper applies the theory of systemic functional linguistics to the analysis of a text “Announces Nomination of
Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State” by George W Bush from functional stylistics perspective. It explores the relationship between the
register of the speech and the metafunctions. Then the paper examines the speech function of the text and interpersonal meaning. Finally, the
author discusses the use of nominalization the most powerful resource for creating grammatical metaphor.
