Abstract A strain of actinomycetewhich can degrade cellulose was isolated from compost, and its morphological, physiological and
biochemical characters were studied. Its substrate mycelium is composed of extensively branched nonfragmenting hyphae and aerial
mycelium is abundant. Only one spore isborne on the aerialhyphae and itssurface issmooth. The cellwallcontains meso-DAP. The
strain can degrade cellulose, gelatin, tyrosine and starch, and can grow under 35~ 60 e and pH 6. 0~ 12. 0. According to the
Bergey. s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, the strain was preliminarily identified as a new species of Thermomonospora. The con-
ditions for production of carboxy methyl cellulase(CMC) and filter paper activity(FPA) were examined. The optimal time for CM-
Case and FPA are 5 days and8 days, respectively. The optimal temperatureand pH are 50 e and 9.5~ 10.5. Theoptimal nitrogen
