The generall thought that wavelet coding of image is superior to traditional DCT transform coding in compressing ratio and coding qualit . It is showed in this thesis that the research of the image and video compression algorithm should be addressed from the overall s stem viewpoint, that is, we should set the importance on the quantization, entrop coding and the com- plex interpla among elements of the coding s stem.
