New Emission Reductions Needed (% Reduction in Attainment Year) Our Personal Contribution to Smog What Can I do? Our Personal Contribution to Smog What Can I do? Comparison Between Average Vehicles and Gross Polluters Review slide and state/district programs ARB sets standards and certifies controls for mobile sources. Cleaner gasoline and diesel fuels, in combination with tighter engine standards, are providing for significant emission reductions in the mobile source categories. Engine standards cover everything from diesel trucks and buses to lawn and garden equipment. Note: Discussion reference: “Model Years” first implemented: Heavy-duty trucks and buses (gas: 1969, diesel: 1973) medium duty (1978) Motorcycles (1975), ATV, Go Karts (1997) Utility and lawn and garden engines (25hp 1995) Portable engines (Offroad HDE 175 hp 1996) Passenger cars (1966)and light trucks (1966) Smoke free diesel trucks (1994) Expand on your local district’s programs - focus on audience interests or latest local initiative. Examples: Limiting VOCs from paints Lower polluting solvents for cleaning operations Controlling VOCs from asphalting operations Controlling gasoline vapors from gasoline distribution and marketing operations Refineries, utilities, and other major industrial facilities Turbine and piston engines Some areas even control water heater emissions! Local mobile source control measures (fleet) and transportation control measures (Next Slide) So how are we doing? Since the 1940’s and the start of the pursuit of clean air, we have seen increase in 1) people, 2) vehicles (from 2 to 26 million) and 3) the number of vehicle miles traveled by tenfold. But, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions dropped from 1.6 million tons per day statewide in 1970 to 1.4 million tons per day in 1990. Last stage 2 alert in SC was in 1988; last stage 3 in 1974. (Note: Look in Tab 3 under background data for district-by district #’
