* NRSAs are designed to encourage people to pursue a career in research and are not intended to assist fellows in obtaining clinical degrees or support clinical residency. However, individuals with extensive clinical training and limited research training can be appointed. Again, the goal of NRSA awards is to ensure there is a workforce able to meet national research priorities. * OHSU has about 32 fellowships and 21 training grants with about 175 appointments. * Here are some statistics on awards from the NIH. * You can reference additional information at these NIH websites. * Trainees receive a stipend rather than a payroll check because the NIH stipulates that fellows cannot be employees. The purpose of NRSA awards is to provide a training experience where as employees provide a service to OHSU. Therefore, checks must be issued by AP rather than by Payroll. Although trainees are not employees, much of the same new hire paperwork must be submitted. For example, trainees will still need an ID badge and a network account. * Since a fellow cannot be considered an employee, OHSU has created classifications to distinguish between various categories of trainees: Predoc Trainees and Postdoc Trainees. A Predoctoral Trainee is an individual who would otherwise qualify as a GRA, but is appointed to an NRSA award. OHSU requires students be covered under the Student Health Plan unless they can show they have coverage elsewhere. The Student Health Service administers the program and health insurance is charged quarterly along with tuition and fees. * 1.Postdoc Trainees are postdoctoral fellows appointed to a T or F award. OHSU is providing these individuals a training experience and therefore they cannot be considered employees. Stipends are issued by Accounts Payable. 2.Postdoc Trainees receive the same health insurance contribution as unclassified employees. If the trainee elects coverage greater than OHSU’s contribution, the difference is deducted from their stipe
