A deal is a deal-except, apparently, when Entergy is involved. The company, a major energy supplier in New England, provoked(1. 诱导,导致) justified (有正当理由的;情有可原的【eg:He is?justified?in giving up the job.? outrage(1. 恶行,暴行[C][(+on/upon)]2. 严重的不道德行为;不法行为[C][(+against/on/upon)]3. [C][(+against/on/upon)]) 【justified outrage:有正当理由的不法行为】in Vermont(美国佛蒙特州)last week when it announced it was reneging([r?nig] vi.食言;背信;违约)on a longstanding(长期的) commitment to abide by the strict nuclear regulations.
Instead, the company has done precisely what it had long promised it would not challenge the constitutionality(符合宪法,合法性)of Vermont’s rules in the federal court, as part of a desperate (不顾一切的,艰难的,极度渴望的)effort to keep its Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant(【固定】核能发电厂; 核电站) running. It’s a stunning(1.
The conflict has been surfacing since 2002, when the corporation bought Vermont’s only nuclear power plant, an aging reactor(1. As a condition of(作为…的条件) receiving state approval(批准,认可,赞成,同意)for the sale, the company agreed to seek permission from state regulators(1. In 2006,the state went a step further, requiring that any extension of the plant’s(1. [U])license be subject to(受… Then, too, the company went along(1.
Either Entergy never really intended to live by(靠…过活)those commitments, or it simply didn’t foresee what would happen next. A string of accidents, including the partial collapse of a cooling tower(冷却塔) in 207 and the discovery of an underground pipe system leakage(leak的n.), raised serious questions about both Vermont Yankee’s safety and Entergy’s management– especially after the company made misleading statements about the pipe. Enraged by Entergy’s behavior, the Vermont Senate(议会)voted
