Haiga is a Japanese literary genre that combines a visual image with a short, subtly-linked poem (usually haiku, senryu or tanka). Classic haiga used simple ink brush strokes and calligraphy. Modern haiga use images created in many media, including photography. You can learn more about modern haiga from Aurora Antonovic, Ray Rasmussen, and Jerry Dreesen. David Giacalone, of Schenectady, NY, wrote the poems appearing in this Calendar. His Mother, Connie Giacalone [“Mama G”] of Rochester, NY, took the photographs, except for her wedding photo on the cover, and the October photo, which was taken by her son Arthur J. Giacalone, of East Aurora, NY. Thanks to Arthur P. Giacalone [“Papa G”] for all the good genes. You can find haiga in this calendar online at the MagnaPoets Japanese Form [MPJF] group weblog, /magnapoets_japanese_form/ and at Davids punditry and poetry weblog f/k/a - /ethicalesq/ . which has genuine haiku and senryu by more than two dozen haiku poets. You can find other haiga by David and Arthur Giacalone, minus the cute kid pix, at two online journals: Simply Haiku Journal - http://www.simplyhaiku.tk/ and HaigaOnline - / Poem credits: Januarys senryu moms arthritis first appeared in Roadrunner Haiku Journal (V: 4, Nov. 2005) Marchs haiku spring arrives first appeared in Simply Haiku Journal (Vol. 3, No. 4, Winter 2005)
