Abstract: Based on the field experiment in the large moving water proof canopy, the effect of water stress on the photosynthetic characteristics of summer maize in different growth periods and its potential mechanism were analysed via the photosynthetic data of leaves. The results showed that photosynthetic rate(Pn), stomatal conductance(Gs) and Transpiration rate(Tr) were reduced along with the soil moisture, while the intercellular CO2 concentration(Ci) and water use efficiency(WUE) increased. With the rising of PAR, photosynthetic rate was increased, but the increasing rate of Pn was falling due to the decreasing of soil moisture. The diurnal rule of Pn and Tr was changed greatly under water stress, and the decrease at jointing stage was less serious than that at mature stage. WUE was negatively related to Tr, Ci and Gs, while Pn was in opposite way. Key words: maize, water stress, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency
