As a matter of fact, many translators usually think that to translate is to reproduce the “meaning”. But only to reproduce the “meaning” is far from being perfect in translation. Since representation of the original style constitutes an indispensable part in translation, a translator must take the “style” into consideration. The stylistic representation is prevalent in the translation field. In Eugene A. Nida’s view, “Translating consists in producing in the receptor language the closest natural equivalent to the message of the source language, first in terms of meaning and secondly in terms of style.” To this end, the thesis attempts to discuss some basic concepts of English stylistics and some arguments about translation theories. I focus on the characteristics of major varieties of English, the varieties being distinguished in terms of users, uses and users ’ social relations. At the latter part of the thesis, based on an analysis of the dominant and recessive stylistic features, the author suggests two basic techniques of representing the original styleimitating and recasting.
