TRANSFORMATION OF GEOMETRY INFORMATION BASED ON FACE HIERARCHY BETWEEN CAD SYSTEM AND VIRTUAL ASSEMBLY ENVIRONMENT Abstract :Traditional assembly depends on mock-ups, but creation of these mock-ups is time-consuming and labor-consuming. The development of VA based on virtual reality (VR) provides us a low-cost and rapid method for assembly. VR is of three characteristics: immersion, interaction and imagination. With VR technology, geometry models and tolerance (or errors) values are inputted into computer after parts are designed. Equipments, tools and human model are united in VE to analyze and evaluate assembly performance. Unqualified structure is then corrected, assembly scenario is optimized and best assembly plan is selected to assure the success of actual assembly. After all these steps, actual assembly is implemented. Therefore product development cycle is shortened and product development cost is decreased. Key words: virtual assembly, virtual environment, data transformation, geometry  Although CAD model can be transferred into VE, these models are of only the concept of body and not of that of face. The whole assembly or single part can be selected, but faces of parts can not be selected. However face is an important concept in assembly, and its functions are as follows: (1) orientation of pails or assembly bodies; (2)constraint definition; (3)joint definition; (4)definition of shape tolerance and position tolerance; (5)definition of precision and roughness; (6)physical information definition(e.g. color and material etc.) etc.. Without the concept of face, the concept of assembly becomes vague and VA system is also reduced to a simple simulation system. So it is far from requirement when VA is of only the concept of bodies. So concept of face is needed to be created while creating VR document.
