The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of Applied Social Sciences M.A. Social Work (China) Qualitative Research in Social Sciences (社會科學的質性研究) Dr. Ku Hok Bun (古學斌) Course Objective (課程目的): This course aims at introducing students the theory and the practice of qualitative research. As qualitative research have increasingly become paradigmatic important in different disciplines of social science, it is quite necessary for students of social sciences to catch up what the current debates on methodologies. Through this course, students are capable of handling the basic technique of qualitative methods. Format (教學形式): Since this is a graduate seminar course, students are required to participate in discussion actively. Lectures will be interwoven with discussions by using the exemplar works of some classics of ethnography. So students are required to prepare the reading before the class. Requirements (教學要求): Attendance and active participation in all class meetings are required. Assessment (評估標準): Each student is required to come up with a research proposal for a project using either participant observation and / or in-depth interview. The research proposal (about 15 –20 pages) should include a short statement of their research problem, literature review, theoretical problems, research planning, protocol for interviews or observation, initial findings from pilot study.
