Overview of Chapter 17 This chapter provides a systematic way to view and understand people in enterprises. The chapter shows why it is important to understand people and their natures. Chapter Outline and Key Points I. Nature and definition of leading A. Leading is the process of influencing people so they will strive willingly and enthusiastically toward the achievement of group goals. B. Leading includes motivation, leadership, and communication. Chapter Outline and Key Points II. Importance of understanding the human factor in enterprises A. People assume different roles. B. There is no average person. C. Personal dignity is important. III Models of people A. Managers have in their minds a model of Chapter Outline and Key Points individual and organizational behavior that is based on assumptions about people. B. Models include those by Schein, Porter and his colleagues, and McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y. C. There have been misunderstandings about McGregor’s theory. Chapter Outline and Key Points D. The effective manager takes a eclectic approach drawing from different models. IV. Perception in the enterprise environment A. It is important that the manager understands some common perceptual fallacies. Chapter Outline and Key Points B. Selective perception means some information is processed while other is ignored. C. Common perceptual errors include stereotyping, halo effect, and projection. V. Harmonizing individual and enterprise objectives: the key to leading Chapter Outline and Key Points A.
