Design of a Wind Turbine Simulator Using DC Motor
and SIMOREG DC MASTER

Abstract: In order t o meet the requirement s of small w ind pow er generation research, the operation principle of a
wind turbine and t he feasibility of its characteristic simulation using closedloop control of DC motor torque w ere an
alyzed. The DCmotorbased simulator of a small w ind turbine was designed, and its implementation scheme in
which DC motor w as driven by SIMOREG DC MAST ER 6RA70 and the test system w ith MSG (permanent mag
net synchronous generator) were presented. Experimental results show that the w ind turbine simulat or proposed is
able to simulate the torquespeed and powerspeed characteristics of a small w ind turbine, and provides a practical
solution of the prime mover for the research on the w ind power technology in laboratory.
