The Mission of Our Generation: Creating a Harmonious Global Village By Wang Xi, Zhengzhou University Honorable Judges, ladies and gentlemen: As I am delivering my speech, the Japanese are still in deep sorrow after the destructive 9.0-magnitude earthquake. Such a catastrophe happened in Japan, but the close attention it has aroused is from the whole world. As citizens of the global village, never before have we been so closely linked to each other. Under this circumstance, I believe the mission of our generation is to create a harmonious global village of eternal peace, mutual respect and humanistic assistance. However, the current situation is far from satisfying. Politically, disputes caused by ethnic, religious, territorial and resource problems take place from time to time. Economically, the gap between the rich and the poor is further widened: 20 percent of the worlds population has more wealth than the remaining 80 percent. Culturally, the developing countries’ cultures are to varying degrees damaged, dominated or even replaced by those of the highly developed ones. All of these remind us of the bitterness mentioned by Bertrand Russell: “Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors and the whole of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be.” Ladies and gentlemen, how can we solve these problems? I’d like to share with you my understandings. Politically, by adhering to the highest principle of political tolerance, we should seek common points while reserving differences on the basis of equality, trust and mutual understanding. Economically, in fields such as advanced techniques, natural resources and large-scale labor force, we should strengthen cooperation to create the pattern of economic complementation and win-win development. Culturally, for the sake of self-enrichment, we should frequently communicate with each other to achieve the state of culturally ecologic diversity. All in all, we should think and act as world ci
