ANALYSIS OF TENSOR PR ODUCT MULTIGRID y S B ORM AND R HIPTMAIR Abstract We consider anisotropic second order elliptic b oundary value problems in two dimen sions for which the anisotropy is exactly aligned with the co ordinate axes This includes cases where the op erator features a singular p erturbation in one co ordinate direction whereas its restriction to the other direction remains neatly elliptic Most prominently such a situation arises when p olar co ordinates are intro duced The common multigrid approach to such problems relies on line relaxation in the direction of the singular p erturbation combined with semicoarsening in the other direction Taking the idea from classical Fourier analysis of multigrid we employ eigenspace techniques to separate the co ordinate directions Thus convergence of the multigrid metho d can b e examined by lo oking at onedimensional op erators only In a tensor pro duct Galerkin setting this makes it p ossible to conrm that the convergence rates of the multigrid Vcycle are b ounded indep endently of the numb er of grid levels involved In addition the estimates reveal that convergence is also robust with resp ect to a singular p erturbation in one co ordinate direction Finally we supply numerical evidence that the algorithm p erforms satisfactorily in settings more general than those covered by the pro of Key words Robust multigrid metho ds anisotropic elliptic problems semicoarsening AMS sub ject classications N F Intro duction We start with the motivating example from Ch Con sider Poissons equation u f on a segment of the unit disk with a small hole punched out at the center f xy R x y g and assume homogeneous Dirichlet b o
