Dynamics of an Explicit Rate Allo cation Algorithm for ATM Networks  L Kalampoukas A Varma Computer Engineering Department University of California Santa Cruz CA USA Email f lamprosvarmag cseucscedu K K Ramakrishnan A TT Bel l Laboratories Murray Hil l NJ USA Email kkramaresearchattcom Abstract In this pap er we study the p erformance of an explicit rate allo cation algorithm for ATM networks using the available bitrate ABR class of service We examine the b ehavior of ABR trac with simple cell sources and demonstrate that the allo cation algorithm is fair and maintains network eciency in a variety of network congurations We also study the b ehavior of TCPIP sources using ABR service in a network of switches employing the rate allo cation algorithm the results show substantial improvements in fairness and eciency in comparison with the p erformance of TCP in an underlying datagrambased network We study the p erformance of ABR trac in the presence of higherpriority variable bit rate VBR video trac and show that the overall system achieves high utilization with mo dest queue sizes in the switches and the ABR ows adapt to the available rate in a fairly short interval We also demonstrate the scalability of the rate allo cation algorithm with resp ect to the numb er of connections Keywords Explicit rate allo cation congestion control TCP over ATM INTRODUCTION Asynchronous Transfer Mo de ATM networks are b eing develop ed with the intent of pro viding a single common technology to carry voice video and data trac Networks based on ATM combine the exibility of packetswitched networks with the service guarantees and predictability oered by circuitswitched network
