BERGER 9 9 High Energy Physics Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL 60439-4815, USA 1 E-mail: ELB@hep.anl.gov c e and D HARRY CONTOPANAGOS 5 High Energy Physics Division, Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL 60439-4815, USA 2 E-mail: CONTOPAN@hep.anl.gov v 2 1 ABSTRACT 2 2 A calculation of the total cross section for top quark production in hadron- 1 5 hadron collisions is presented based on an all-orders perturbative resummation of 9 initial-state gluon radiative contributions to the basic quantum chromodynamics / subprocesses. Principal-value resummation is used to evaluate all relevant large h p threshold contributions. In this method there are no arbitrary infrared cutoﬀs, - and the perturbative regime of applicability is well deﬁned, two attributes that p signiﬁcantly reduce the estimated uncertainty of the results. For pp¯ collisions √ e h at center-of-mass energy s = 1.8 TeV and a top mass of 175 GeV, we obtain ¯ +0.07 : σ (tt) = 5.52−0.45pb , in agreement with experiment. Predicted cross sections are v
