10.1007/sl1676-012-0239-3 GrowthandyieldofninepinespeciesinAngola CristobalDelgado-Matas TimoPukkala 2011-04-26 2011-07-12 Abstract:Aspeciesintroductionexperimentincludingseveraltropical pinesandeucalyptswasestablishedin1966/1967intheTchiangare searchstationinAngolanHighlands.Despite27yearsofpoliticalcon flict(1975-2002)andlackofmanagement,theresearchexperimenthas remainedrelativelywellconserved.Wemeasuredthebestconserved plotsthatwere41yearsoldin2007toobtaininformationonthegrowth ofdifferentpinespecies.Wecalculatedstandcharacteristicsincluding basalarea,dominantheight,meandiameter,andstandvolumeforPinus patulaSchiedeexSchiltdl.EtCham.,PinuspseudostrobusLindl.,Pinus kesiyaRoyleexGordon,PinusdevonianaLindl.,Pinuschiapensis (Martinez)Andresen,PinuselliottiiEngelm.,PinusgreggiiEngelm.Ex ParL,PinusmontezumaeLamb.andPinusoocarpaSchiedeexSchltdl. Thegrowingstockvolumeat41yearswasthehighestinP.pseudostro bus,1,325m3·ha-1,followedbyP.kesiyawith1,200m3·ha-1.Thewidely plantedP.patulahadagrowingstockvolumeof892m3·ha-1.P.oocarpa andP.pseudostrobushadthehigheststandbasalarea,over80m2·ha-1. Usingincrementcoreanalyseswestudiedthetemporaldevelopmentof standcharacteristics.Analysisofthemeanannualincrement(MAI) showedthatrotationlengthsof20-30yearswouldmaximizewood production.Withtheserotationlengths,theMAIofP.pseudostrobus wouldbe35m3·ha-1.OtherproductivespecieswereP.kesiya,P.oocarpa andP.chiapensis.P.patulahadamaximumMAIof20m3·ha-1.P. greggiihadthelowestmeanannualvolumeproduction,onlyabout13 m3·ha-1.
