The stressstrain curve, the relation betw eenAE characteristics and tmi e are obtained. The relation of the tmi ew ith cumu lativeAE events, AE energy release rate, and theb value of the relation betw een the magnitude and fre quency are selected to study the precursory characteristics of rock failure. The resu lts show that during the in itial load ing phase, AE events are very few and its cum ulative number rap idly increases at the late phase of the rock elastic deformation and at the plastic phase; theAE energy keeps a low release rate for a long tmi e during the rock fracturing process bu t exhib its an evident release just before the rock failure.
