The destination of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the organization of a computer system. Study computers’ major components and their functions. Learn assembly language programming. The families of Intel IA-32 Pentium architectures will be used as a typical example for the discussion. 2 Textbook “Computer Organization,” by Carl Hamacher, Zvonko Vranesic and Safwat Zaky. Fifth Edition McGraw-Hill, 2002. 3 Course topics 1. Introduction Chapter 1 : overview of CHCS, basic concepts 2. Machine programming sequencing and address methods Chapter 2 : machine instructions and programs, basic addressing modes, program examples at machine instruction level to discuss operations of DS. 3. Examples of ISAs Chapter 3 : Intel IA-32 instruction set architecture. 4. Input/Output organization Chapter 4 : several ways I/O operations are performed: I/O device addressing, I/O data transfers, Interrupts. 5. Memory architecture Chapter 5 : Memory hierarchy, Primary memory, Cache memory, virtual memory. 6. Arithmetic Chapter 6 : Representation of number, Logic design for Integer arithmetic hardware and floating-point arithmetic. 7.
