B) I was very lazy during high school and just scraped into college. to scrape something off To remove something from a surface by using a sharp tool of some kind eg: Before I can put up new wallpaper, I have to scrape off all the old paint. What a nightmare job that is!! to scrape something out 1) To remove something from the inside of an object by using a sharp tool of some kind, such as a knife eg: I always scrape out the seeds of a melon before eating it. 2) American English: to manage to just make enough money to live on eg: she scraped out a living by delivering the local newspaper. IDIOM: the genie is out of the bottle This is used to show that someones actions will lead to dramatic and permanent changes, especially with negative consequences eg: Now that genetic engineers and scientists are cloning animals, the genie is well and truly out of the bottle and cant be put back in. Note: Synonymous idiom:- Pandoras box. This reference is to Greek mythology and can also be a noun: its a Pandoras box. BONUS IDIOM: take up the gauntlet To accept someones invitation to fight or to compete in something eg: I was challenged to race against him so I took up the gauntlet Note: the origin of this idiom comes from the tale of the knights glove in Medieval times.
