The Bob and Rob Show Study Guide Lesson 130: Hodgepodge date: March 24, 2008 Show notes We have the regular idioms and phrasal verbs not to mention a look at passives this week. We even teach some Japanese phrases! Ganbatte Kudasai1 Phrasal Verbs and Idioms to Improve on (something) To produce something that is of a higher quality than something else eg: it seems incredible, but athletes are constantly improving on their best records. to inform on somebody To accuse someone or give evidence against someone to the police eg; one of the mafia bosss closest henchmen informed on him. to infringe on something To restrict somebodys rights or freedom eg: most people agree that the paparazzi infringe on celebrities rights to privacy. IDIOM: Howz zatt? This is a cricket term or exclamation - it is used when asking the umpire if he agrees that the batsman has been bowled. It is usually shouted at high pitch eg: HOWZATT Also, it can be used as an interrogative eg: Bob: my friend was really lucky, he landed a great job without any experience. Rob: Oh really, hows that? BONUS IDIOM: to drive you up the wall Something that makes you really angry, frustrated or mad eg: It drives me crazy when people are late for their appointment. Grammar blues Using passives: In active sentences, we need to have an agent (or person) as a subject but in the passive we can leave out the agent by omitting the prepositional phrase with by. So, here are some situations in which we prefer to use the passive rather than the active structure: 1) when the agent is not known eg: my bloody flat was burgled while I was away for the weekend. 2) when the agent is obvious eg: they are being looked after at the nursery (by the teaching staff is not needed as it is clear). 3) when the agent is unimportant eg: she is thought to be travelling somewhere in Asia. 4) when the agent is people in a general mode eg: lots of goodies can be found on the new and improved Bob and Ro
