ISBn 90-272-1665-7 (Eur) / 1-58811-600-X (US). €99 / $119. his volume deals with classroom translation from a variety of per- spectives, both when translation itself is among the objectives and Twhen it impinges on the educational situation in other ways. In the opening paper, Wolfram Wilss touts empirical research as a way of winning confidence for translation teaching in academia. out of the 12 papers, two (Anne Schjoldager and Marie Källkvist) follow that advice and present em- pirical results, dealing with the relationship between translation competence and L2 competence. Academic translation programmes are described by Rosemary MacKenzie, María González Davies, Soňa Preložníková Conrad Toft, Christina Schäffner, and Silvia Bernardini in one of her contributions to the volume. Bernardini (in her other paper) and Allison Beeby deal with language learning for translators, and Penelope Sewell addresses a topic that several other authors also touch on – the use of translation in language teach- ing and/or testing. The final paper by Stephen Barbour discusses problems with modern languages degrees in Britain and the USA. Among the volume’s merits is its interdisciplinarity, bringing together ideas from both translation teaching and L2 teaching. Readers unfamiliar with the history of language teaching methodology, for instance, may find Schjold- ager’s overview of the fall and revival of the grammar-translation method a useful introduction to the field. Several papers offer ideas and observations for syllabus and course design. Schäffner describes a thought-provoking way of starting a translation course by having students consider a list of statements about the nature of translation (p. 115).
