Since Song dynasty and Yuan dynasty, influenced by traditional cultural philosophy, Chinese painting focused on Chinese wash ink freehand brushwork, advocating pen and ink and spirit, ignoring representation of color. As the spirit representation of the painting style of the literati, ink had been developed and praised greatly. On the contrary, Chinese heavy colored painting, as the delegate of the works of craftsman, had a chill welcome, reached its lowest ebb at one time, and was welcome up to the recent times. In fact, there were many classic treatise works about color in Chinese ancient theory of painting.
