Studentacademicidentityrepresentsthewillingnessandcommitmenttoengagewithacademicwaysofknowing,
being,and doingandassuch inan importantaspectofbecomingacademically literate.Thispaperreportson
findingsassociatedwithstudentengagementwithacademictasksintheundertakingofafield—basedprogrammeof
earlychildhoodinitialteachereducationinAotearoa(theMfiorinameforNewZealand).Datawerecollectedfrom
students,teachereducators,andassociateteachersusingqualitativetoolsincludingopen—endedquestionnairesand
group and individualinterviews.Participation wasgathered from fourtertiary providersoffield-based early
childhoodinitialteachereducationwithinAotearoa.Additionalcontextualdatabeingsoughtrfom thewiderearly
childhoodcommuniyt inwhichfield-basedstudywassituated.Interpretationofthefindingsindicatesthatstudent
academicidentityisinfluencedbythenatureofacademictasksandtheassociatedexperiencesofdissonanceas
studentsmoverfom thecomfortzoneofeverydaywaysofbeing,knowing,anddoingtothoserequiredofthe
academe.Relevanceofacademictaskswithfutureprofessionalpracticewasalsoidentifiedassignificanttostudent
engagement.Theresearch findingsrevealthatattentiontoacademictaskswithinwiderprogrammecurriculum
designinfield-basedprogrammesissignificantinsupportingstudentsachievingsuccessfulacademicoutcomes.
